Reliance

Reliance is a pink, seedless table grape with very high dessert quality. Berries are medium in size that grow in medium to large clusters. Hardy vines are very productive and vigorous. Blooms late and is disease resistant. Great for jelly and juicing.

The first grape variety patented by the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture was named "Reliance" because of it's reliable growing habits, but Stanley Brown of Clarksville called it the "Will Rogers" grape.

"I never met a person who didn't like it," Brown said.

Brown produces fruits for propagation &emdash; that is, he sells grape vines and other fruit plants to vineyards, orchards and other fruit producers. He was one of the first "propagators" licensed to grow Reliance when it was released in 1983.

"If you raise Reliance for fresh market or a 'pick-your-own' vineyard, it's great," he said. "It's very sweet and seedless, and it grows great in the vineyard."

Reliance has been the most successful release from the UA grape breeding program, said John Clark, fruit breeder for the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station and director of the UA fruit breeding program. "Although mostly used commercially in small vineyards, it has found its way into many local markets and home gardens and is best known for its exceptional sweetness and flavor."

Clark said Reliance is grown to a limited extent in Arkansas because its sugar content can lead to excessive water uptake when rain is heavy around harvest, and that can cause its thin skin to split. Nevertheless, it has found wide use in the eastern United States, which in grape terms means east of the Rocky Mountains. It's especially popular in northern states because of its ability to tolerate cold weather.
